consciousness is a gift but it is has tricked us into thinking that we can simply will ourselves into higher or otherwise more improved versions of our person through endless introspection. all other creatures in the animal kingdom recognize that change only comes from action…..when a lizard feels sick, they’ll lay in the sun because they know sunlight manufactures much needed nutrients. there is very limited action -> reaction in the darkness of your skull unless it’s in some way informed by the things happening around you, and “growth” being isolated in this way can only serve to endlessly recontextualize thoughts, memories and feelings to the point where they are rendered irrelevant to the reality they were based in. I wrote this paragraph largely just to deliver that lizard fact.

No matter how progressive or well-read you are, there are always going to be moments in your life where somebody pushes back against something that's so culturally ingrained you never even considered it before. And you'll say "Huh, it never occurred to me to challenge this but you're right" and that doesn't mean you were "morally toxic" before, it means you're a non-omniscient human capable of growth.

ya idk who needs to hear this but just because you’re exploited under capitalism doesnt mean that all of your selfish and destructive behaviors and decisions regarding consumption are justified and moral. individual action is the bedrock of collective action. if you’ve been convinced otherwise, if you’ve been convinced that individual action is fruitless, then you’ve resigned to the insidious narratives that benefit only those who gain from systems of violence and exploitation.
The way that Eve and Villanelle naturally are, and what they unconsciously offer are profoundly the things that each character needs. Villanelle brings so much energy, vitality, possibility, strength and so much violence and sexuality. These are the elements that for Eve, have been on pause, or not ever explored. The thing that Eve offers Villanelle is profound acceptance. I never felt that Eve judged Villanelle. It’s not an obvious match, but I do feel that they’re matched well. Some of the things that Villanelle has been searching for in the past three seasons have been a certain type of evenness, a certain type of humanity or the possibility of humanity, which Eve embodies naturally. - Sandra Oh
